The Philadelphia Eleven
St. David's Episcopal Church, in collaboration with the Diocese of West Texas, invite you to a special screening of The Philadelphia Eleven Sunday, July 14th 6:00 - 8:00 with a panel discussion and refreshments to follow In an act of civil disobedience, a group of women and their supporters organized their ordination to become Episcopal priests in 1974. The Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia welcomed them, but change is no small task. The women were harassed, threatened and banned from stepping on church property. In this feature-length documentary film, The Philadelphia Eleven, we meet the women who succeeded in building a movement that transformed an age-old institution, and challenged the very essence of patriarchy within Christendom. These women were ordained on July, 29, 1974 - 50 years ago - at the Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia, two years before the Episcopal Church officially permitted the ordination of women. The film includes interviews from a gathering of those still living from the first eleven priests, interviews with the Right Rev. Barbara Harris, who served as crucifer at the ordination, and news footage from 1974. CLICK HERE for more information on the film. |
